Who Can Be Strong?

Bible Reading:1 Samuel 2: 3-9  He will guard the feet of his faithful ones; but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. —1 Samuel 2: 9

Fortitude is not a virtue common to humans. St. Paul warned, “. . . if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall”(l Corinthians 10: 12). And he added, “. . . God’s weakness is stronger than human strength” (1 Corinthians 1: 25). My big problem is the lack of constancy. Making good plans is easy; persisting with them until they are accomplished is difficult.

Again, as I hear St. Paul, I tremble: ‘i. . . I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me”(Romans 7: 19-20).

It is often easier to confront a great danger than to conquer a temptation. A person with the courage to offer his life on the battlefield might capitulate to subtle charm.

It took a stronger and more rare courage for Joseph to stand firm against Potiphar’s seductive wife(Genesis 39) than for Gideon and a handful of men to defeat the powerful army of the Midianites (Judges 7).

“For our struggle is not against enemies of flesh and blood, but against the rulers, the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places”(Ephesians 6: 12).

Prayer

Lord, just as I am, with my burden offaults and weaknesses, I come to you imploring your miracle to save me from myself. Only you, Lord, can strengthen my fragile being and overcome my weaknesses. Lead me to the good I cannot do by myself and liberate me from the evil that lives in me. Amen.
